10.7: Using two Time Machine backups

Rotating Time Machine backups has never been easier as of 10.7. Apple included in Lion a command-line interface for Time Machine which makes it completely scriptable. For the complete details on the command-line interface take a look at the man page for tmutil.

I use two Time Machine backups (see my backup strategy below for my complete backup solution) one at home and one at work. Using MarcoPolo you can set triggers and actions to automatically switch your Time Machine destination.

At home, and at work, I have 10.7 Server setup running the Time Machine service. Using MarcoPolo my laptop can determine its location, work or home, and set the IP address for my server appropriately. The following are the details on how to set this up for a Time Machine destination of an AFP share point. With small changes, this will also work for a Time Machine destination of an external hard drive.

White 'iPhone 4s' shows in AT&T's inventory tracker

A leak from within AT&T's inventory system has lent support to Apple having a remade iPhone 4 in development. The carrier's inventory system as of Saturday had an "iPhone 4s White" listed alongside the regular iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 models. Only one device showed in the Engadget sighting and didn't include capacity....

Dear Aunt TUAW: I just bought an app and then won it

Dear Aunt TUAW,

The good news: I just received an (legit) email saying I won a license for Sparrow!

The bad news: I paid for it LITERALLY 15 minutes ago.

I'm not about to ask for a refund. Oh well. I hope the developer does something great with his cut of my ten bucks.

Thoughts?

Your loving nephew,

Dave

Dear Dave,

If Sparrow was worth supporting before winning a copy, then it was worth supporting after. Don't think about this as having picked up an extra tangible good that you didn't need. Think about it as voting for the app's continued development.

It's seldom considered, but software developers cannot live on rainbows, hugs, and unicorn tears. Money creates the infrastructure that builds the apps you love. Without cash, there can't be software.

By purchasing the app, you're going to help place your vote for keeping it going in the long term -- even if you missed out on a "deal."

Hugs,

Auntie T.

You're the Pundit: Does the classic iPod have a future?

When it comes to forecasting the next big thing, we turn to our secret weapon: the TUAW braintrust. We put the question to you and let you have your go at it. Today's topic is the iPod. Are the non-touch units examples of dead devices walking?

The iPod classic and shuffle lines have had a big "expiration date" stamped on them for quite some time. Maybe it's time for Apple to hold the funeral for these formerly ground-breaking devices.

The classic, with its large capacity hard drive and touch wheel, and the shuffle, with its tiny form factor and limited interface, have each served a niche market for quite a while. Does the shrinking demand for these items and the greater capacity and lower cost for the touch and nano mean an end to the ten-year-old classic collection?

You tell us. Place your vote in this poll and then join in the comments with all your predictions.
