iPad 2 Even Better Than the Original

In USA Today, reviewer Edward Baig argues that the ?slimmed-down iPad 2? makes what was already ?splendid? even better, citing ?headline additions? of front- and rear-facing cameras with FaceTime and PhotoBooth, a ?snappier? Apple A5 dual-core processor, and ?really cool? Smart Cover. Baig calls the new GarageBand and iMovie apps for iPad ?a bargain for would-be rock stars and would-be Spielbergs.?

Apps and games for Easter and Passover

As with most holidays these days, there are now several iOS apps that come in handy when needed in a pinch. For Easter and its surrounding holidays, this can be anything from dying eggs to explaining why today is Good Friday. The New York Times recently recommended several apps for the holiday including:

Egg Dyeing 101: This US$0.99 app from Martha Stewart Living will take you beyond the ordinary hard-boiled egg and has instructions for everything from blowing out eggs to little decorations you can use to turn eggs into animals. A glossary, color wheel and more are included in the app, making this not just a good Easter app, but useful for when you want to do any sort of project involving egg decoration. Those who want to have the fun of dying eggs without dealing with the mess of eggs and dye can go for the $1.99 iColor Easter Eggs.

Read on for more apps that add to the fun of this spring holiday season.

View full resolution images in Podcasts

Audiobooks and certain 'enhanced' Podcasts contain images display as a slideshow synced to the audio but these are not displayed by default when playing the file in iTunes, and when it does show the artwork, it typically only shows the low resolution preview. This hint describes how to see the full resolution images.

I publish my class lectures as enhanced audio Podcasts using ProfCast. These have the full resolution Keynote slides embedded as images in the audio file, but many of my viewers don't realize these are available because iTunes by default only plays the audio and doesn't show the images.

To see the images you need to first make sure the file has downloaded and is playing from your computer (not streaming from the iTunes store as a preview of the selected file), then click on the 'Show Album Artwork' button (a box with an up triangle in the bottom left corner of iTunes). This shows a thumbnail of the image associate ...

Some spiffy cases for your Square credit card reader

As we noted last week, the Square credit card reader is now available in Apple Stores all around the country -- you buy the reader for $9.95, but get a $10 credit when you do so, so the only charges are what you rack up when actually accepting credit card payments. As we've said before, it's a pretty easy way to use cards, whether you just need money from a friend or have a small business that only occasionally takes payments.

But that reader is tiny and easily lost, so what's the best way to keep track of it? A special case, of course. Unpluggd has a few options for keychain cases built specifically to hold that little widget, from $10 up to the excellent case above for $25. Yes, it might seem a little strange to spend that much on a case for something that you essentially got for free. But if it helps you keep track of the reader and have it right there on hand when you need to take a big payment, it'll be worth it, right?
