Windows 8 matches Lion with 'Retina' display, adds Xbox Live

Microsoft in sessions and talks following its Windows 8 preview has confirmed that its OS will have very high resolution display support. Developers are being asked to produce 100 percent, 140 percent, and 180 percent resolutions for artwork in anticipation of 250DPI and higher "HD" screens. The hardware itself should arrive within the "next couple of years," Steve Troughton-Smith heard during one session, but the OS had to be ready in advance....

More Retail Store Openings Scheduled for El Paso, Texas and Bologna, Italy

Just yesterday, we noted that Apple was planning two retail store openings for this week, with the Stratford City store in London opening today and the Jungfernstieg store in Hamburg, Germany following suit on Saturday. Apple has now announced two additional store openings for this Saturday, continuing its third quarter retail push to bring dozens of new stores online ahead of the holiday shopping period.

- Cielo Vista Mall (El Paso, Texas): Apple's first Texas store west of San Antonio, the Cielo Vista Mall location will fill a significant hole in Apple's retail store coverage. The nearest existing store is over 250 miles north in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The nearest store to the west lies over 300 miles away in Tucson, Arizona, while the San Antonio stores are over 500 miles to the east.

Via Rizzoli retail store in Bologna, Italy (Thanks, Dimitris!)

- Via Rizzoli (Bologna, Italy): Apple's eighth Italian store is the company's first in Bologna and is located about 60 miles from the Florence store that opened just over a month ago. The standalone store is the company's first in Italy to not be located inside a shopping mall.

MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.1 addresses Thunderbolt issues

Apple has released MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.1 to address issues with Thunderbolt performance and OS X Lion Recovery over the Internet on 2011-model MacBook Airs. According to Apple, the update is intended to "resolve issues with Apple Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode performance on MacBook Air (mid 2011) models."

The 3.99 MB update is fairly large as firmware updates go (they're usually less than a megabyte), and as with all firmware updates, Apple emphasizes that you must not interrupt your Mac's power during the update lest you risk turning it into a very attractive brick. The update requires OS X Lion, which is pre-installed on affected model MacBook Airs.

Cave Story out for the Mac App Store with new content

Cave Story is a freeware PC game that came out back in 2004, a 2D action platformer created by a one-man team named Pixel. Since then, it's come out on quite a few consoles (I've got it on my DSi, though it's on the Wii as well), and now it's available as Cave Story+ on the Mac App Store. The app is US$9.99 and available for download right now.

Wait a minute, you might be asking: Why do we have to pay $10 for a game you just called freeware? Good question. The original PC title is still downloadable for free, but the Mac App Version is a plus version with new graphics and music created for the WiiWare upgrade, as well as a new level called the Wind Fortress. Pixel is also reportedly planning to add more content to the Mac App Store version in the future, and this is such a lovely and awesome game that it's worth supporting with a few bucks anyway.

If you've never played Cave Story and you enjoy a good "Metroidvania" platformer, you're in for a treat this weekend. Go pick Cave Story+ up right now.
