Accessories: new styluses for iPad, tablets, smartphones

Though Apple CEO Steve Jobs famously said, "if you see a stylus, they blew it" referring to tablets, there are occasions and certain types of software that benefit from stylus use, particularly handwriting, photo-editing and drawing apps. As users continue to find specific uses for styluses on iOS products (and particularly competitor touchscreen devices), a small but significant market has sprung up to meet demand. Four of the latest styluses to hit the market are highlighted below....

Firemint hosts contest, win a chance to play Spy Mouse first

Developer Firemint (makers of the extremely popular Flight Control and Real Racing games) is about to release its latest game Spy Mouse. Along with parent company EA, it's hosting a contest to let a few players into the game early. You have to log in with Twitter over on this page, then "answer the clue," a new one every day, to be entered to win. You can also do a little social networking promotion for Firemint to increase your chances. For every 100 likes the company gets on its Facebook page, another winner will get picked for the current clue.

In addition to playing the game early, Firemint's also giving away copies of EA games like Dead Space and The Sims 3. If you're interested to see what Firemint's been up to as early as possible (and for free), definitely give the contest a look. Heck, you could always do what I do: Send the promotional tweets out on a completely separate Twitter account, which lets you get the word out there without bothering your usual followers.

East Coast earthquake seizes up AT&T, Verizon cellphones

Readers as well as multiple news outlets are reporting widespread phone outages across the East Coast following an earthquake. The Virginia tremor, which hit 6 on the Richter scale according to the USGS, has at least temporarily managed to disrupt cellphone and landline service on AT&T, Verizon, and possibly other carriers. It's unclear how much of this is a genuine break in service versus just the networks being overwhelmed by calls from others....

Study shows iPhone owners open to mobile payments

A British study by research and consulting firm YouGov reveals that almost half of iPhone owners are open to making mobile payments. As noted by GigaOM, the study says 46% of iPhone owners in the UK would be willing to pay bills using their iPhone, 62% would transfer funds from one account to another, 69% would check account balances and 45% would feel comfortable making payments to other people. Those numbers bode well for companies like iZettle and Square, who just released its Square Card Case app today.

Despite this, only 31% of those polled reported that they would feel comfortable making contactless payments through near field communication (NFC) technology. That could be due to the fact that people seem to have a distrust for the technology, assuming that simply walking past a NFC reader will lead to your bank accounts being drained by some malevolent hacker.

As could be expected, the study also showed that iPhone owners aren't the only ones open to mobile payments. Android and Blackberry owners showed similar interest, though in less numbers when compared to iPhone users. Age also played a factor; younger respondents reported a greater likelihood to use mobile payment technology.

10.7: Four-Finger flip in Mail

There was once a hint that worked for previous versions of Mail about three-fingered scrolling to flip through messages.

With Lion, the three-fingered flip now launches Mission Control, so navigating through Mail messages has changed to a FOUR-fingered flip. It took me a while to figure it out on the Magic Trackpad -- it seems to call for a little practice.

A flip Up/Left brings you to the next message up the list; a flip Down/Right brings you to the next message down.

[crarko adds: This is starting to take on the feel of learning to play a new musical instrument, which is not all bad, and possibly intentional on Apple's part.]

Report: Apple filming new iPhone commercials for October

A source allegedly involved in the filming has told AppleInsider that Apple's ad agency is now shooting ad spots for the iPhone 5 national campaign -- but the filming isn't slated to wrap up until early October, supporting rumors of a mid-October or later release. The report says filming is taking place in Los Angeles under the auspices of TBWAChiatDay, Apple's long-time ad agency. Apple has been known to film its phone commercials roughly five weeks in advance....
