Silent Dropbox update adds Lion support

Unless you have super-sekrit magic powers, haunt the Dropbox forums or are Steve Sande, you might not have noticed that Dropbox finally upgraded to a Lion-compatible build.

Dropbox normally uses a silent-but-deadly approach to handle its updates. Basically it installs it automatically for you sometime within a week or so of the new release. But would it kill Dropbox just to give you an alert and let you know that it's ready? Especially for a big change like restoring the Dropbox submenu in Lion?

Here's how you can manually upgrade without waiting for Dropbox to catch up. First confirm that you are running an earlier version. Dropbox > Preferences > Account reports the current version.

Next, head on over to the install page and download the 1.1.40 installer. Open the dmg. Quit your earlier Dropbox install and drag the new version into Applications. Then launch the updated app and Bob's your uncle.

If you're one of the few dozen people who have been using my GrabUpper utility to generate URLs while waiting for Dropbox to catch up to Lion, you'll be pleased to know that the utility continues to work with the 1.1.40 release. It will monitor your Dropbox folder and create URLs whenever you drop something in.

For everyone else, you can revert to using the contextual pop-up menu (Right-Click > Dropbox > Copy Public Link) now that it finally works on Lion.

Ad suggests free iPhone 3GS at Best Buy Mobile on Aug 22

TechBuffalo has posted a photo of what appears to be a genuine ad, announcing that the iPhone 3GS will be free with a two year contract at Best Buy Mobile stores on Monday, August 22.

This is the second time Best Buy has offered the iPhone 3GS for free with a two-year contract. The first was back on December 10, 2010. However, while the December sale was good in all Best Buy stores, the flyer for the August 22nd sale only shows the Best Buy Mobile logo, so we'll have to wait and see if the sale extends to the regular stores as well.

If you want an iPhone, this is a great deal. The iPhone 3GS runs iOS 4 just fine. However it will run iOS 5 without some of its marquee features. For example, the iPhone 3GS will not have the ability to edit images using the red eye removal, crop, and enhance tools in the iOS 5 Photos app.

Also keep in mind that the iPhone 3GS will probably not be upgradable after iOS 5. If that stuff doesn't matter to you and you just want a free iPhone, head to Best Buy Mobile stores on August 22nd!

AT&T to eliminate $10 text message option for new customers

The company that's becoming increasingly famous for regularly shooting itself in the foot when it comes to customer relations just blew off another toe. Our sister site Engadget reports that AT&T is "streamlining" its text messaging plans for new customers; when translated from PR-speak, this means new customers will have only a single, unlimited text messaging plan to choose from. The US$10 for 1000 messages plan is going away.

Existing customers on the $10 plan will have that plan grandfathered. However, new customers will only be able to choose between the $20 unlimited plan or no plan at all, in which case they'll be charged $0.20 per text ($.30 per MMS). If you find yourself sending less than 100 text messages per month, you may be just fine without dropping another $20 on your monthly bill, but if you find yourself in the 100-1000 messages per month range as I do, AT&T's move smacks of greed. Shocker.

It's quite likely that this move is at least partially a response to iMessages in iOS 5, expected to debut in the fall. The feature allows iOS device owners to bypass the SMS protocol when sending messages to other iOS devices. Since the majority of US iPhone owners are still on AT&T's network, this could have led to a measurable drop in the number of text messages sent on AT&T's network, resulting in lost revenues for its SMS packages.

Wall Street Journal Confirms Early 2012 iPad 3 with Retina Display

In case you still had doubts, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple is indeed working on its next generation iPad for early 2012. The newspaper also seems to confirm the 2048x1536 Retina display that has been long rumored.
The next generation iPad is expected to feature a high resolution display - 2048 by 1536 compared with 1024 by 768 in the iPad 2 - and Apple's suppliers have already shipped small quantities of components for the sampling of the iPad 3. Suppliers said Apple has placed orders for a 9.7-inch screen device.
According to "people familiar with the situation", Apple is aiming to launch the iPad 3 in early 2012.

The Wall Street Journal's sources also indicate that a trial run will begin in October and that Apple has already started placing orders for many of the key components for the next iPad.

While the report doesn't seem to add much new information, it does add a more credible voice to the rumors coming out of China about Apple's iPad 3.
