10.7: Automator Services for multi-language speech

OS X Lion now has many different languages available to install in your speech preferences. This is something I've wanted for a long time, because I have long aspired to learn Korean and Japanese. Being able to easily hear things spoken in those languages would really help out.

The problem is that Lion will only speak selected text using the voice that you set as default. I have Alex set as default and when I try to have it speak text using the built-in context menu item, it does nothing.

There is a way around this by using Automator.

First you need to go into the Speech preferences and install any languages that you want to use. Next, open up Automator and make a new Service that receives the selected text in any application. Then add the 'Speak Text' action to the workflow and choose the voice that you want. Finally, save the service with a name that tells you what language it c ...

10.7: Move an application's windows to another Space all at once

In Leopard and Snow Leopard, you could move all of an application's windows from one space to another by holding the Shift key. This no longer works in Lion's Mission Control.

But the windows of an application are grouped together and badged by the application's icon. It turns out this icon behaves as a handle for the windows underneath it -- you can drag it to another space, and it pulls all its windows with it.

It's worth noting that this applies only to the icons that sit on the windows themselves, not the Dock icons.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described.]

Before and After Pictures of Apple's Fifth Avenue Cube Redesign

Yesterday Apple revealed the changes it is making to the iconic Fifth Avenue Cube in a drawing on the side of the temporary construction barriers. The multi-million dollar upgrade will reduce the number of glass panes from 90 to 15 by using larger, seamless pieces of glass, and will give the cube a much cleaner, more streamlined look:

The above rendering of the new cube, provided to Gothamist by Apple, shows what the improved structure will look like. Compare the simplified glass structure in the rendering above to the much more complicated glass in the old cube:

The tall, huge pieces of glass bring to mind the glass frontages in newer Apple Stores like the Pudong location in Shanghai or the Upper West Side location in Manhattan. IFOAppleStore has additional details about the new glass technology behind the building.

The upgraded cube is scheduled for completion this November.
