Rdio gets native iPad app, hikes prices to fit in-app rules

Rdio catered to iPad owners for the first time Thursday with a new native app (free, App Store). The new version provides a nearly always-on sidebar for faster navigation as well as pop-overs to handle elements like friend profiles without interruption. Albums also get much more play with full track listings alongside the album....

10.7: Remove Safari session auto-restore

This hint describes how to not restore your previous browsing session after force-quitting Safari in Lion.

I disabled System Preferences » General » Restore windows... almost immediately after I discovered that Lion wants to automatically restore reopened applications to their previous state. Today while browsing with Safari I encountered one of those 'YOU WIN' sites that had a popup where the popup window lacks any controls except an 'Okay' button. That window held exclusive focus for Safari. Oh, and no red 'Close this window' button at the top-left either. The only intended way past this window was to click the Okay button. Very annoying, and I refuse to trust these sites since you don't really know what JavaScript or other code lurks beneath that Okay button. Note that you can't even view the page source since the popup has exclusive focus for the application.

So I did a force-quit on Safari as I've always done pre-Lion. When I res ...

Apple's hold on metal chassis supply chain hinders competition

Apple's wild success with unibody construction for all models of the MacBook appears to be having a negative effect on the competition in more than just reduced sales -- the other vendors can't get their hands on the CNC (computer numerical control) lathes that are required to make ultra thin magnesium-aluminum shells to encase the electronics of Intel's UltraBook design guideline.

According to Taiwan-based electronics industry site Digitimes, Catcher Technology and Foxconn Technology both have more than 10,000 of the expensive CNC lathes used to make notebook chassis. These two companies are major suppliers to Apple, which means that companies wishing to make metal UltraBooks have to compete for capacity on those lathes. That's a hindrance to high-capacity production, so many manufacturers are choosing a different material.

For the competition, it looks like RHCM (rapid heating cycle molding) based fiberglass is the solution. The fiberglass is mixed with plastic to create a material that is both tough, moldable, and lightweight, and the material is also about US$20 cheaper per laptop than the more expensive metal. While that doesn't sound like much of a cost reduction for manufacturers, it boils down to an end-market price that can be as much as $100 cheaper.

The main beneficiary of the competition's move to the RHCM plastic-fiberglass composite is Taiwan-based Mitac Precision, which apparently has the yield and production capacity to keep the UltraBooks flowing.

10.7: Re-downloading Lion from App Store again

I've seen suggestions that a key combination and clicking Purchased will allow downloading of Lion again. First the word I have in my copy of app store says 'Purchases.' Anyway, this didn't work for me using a NON-LION 10.7 system but I have figured out method that may or may not be well known.

I only started on this quest when I had problems burning a boot DVD of InstallESD. I figured the file was corrupt.

Method 1: Use a Mac with app store that has not downloaded Lion. Using the App Store account that originally purchased Lion, start your download. Apple allows the use of Lion on all your Mac for $30.

Method 2: Move Install Mac OS X Lion.app that you've perviously downloaded to the trash. The system will ask for the admin password. Now simply launch App Store and go to Purchases. Note the change from Installed to Install.

[crarko adds: Not a lot of new ground covered here, but there were a few submissions of variation of thi ...

10.7: Enable the FTP server

Apple seemingly dropped the FTP Server support in Mac OX Lion. Only the GUI has been removed and the FTP Server can be activated.

You can still enable it with the command line. To start it type the Terminal command:

sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

To stop it:

sudo -s launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

[crarko adds: So if you need FTP, it's still available. It should easy enough to make an AppleScript to toggle this on and off. I'd probably turn it off while not using it. And of course if you turn on Remote Login (ssh), that will make SFTP available.]

Apple considers buying another $5 billion in patents

Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is considering buying InterDigital's patent portfolio, which is worth up to US$5 billion. The patents cover a wide range of mobile technologies used to transfer information over high-speed mobile phone networks. Just last month, Apple was the leader of a consortium that bought Nortel's patent portfolio for $4.5 billion.

The ownership of patents is becoming a key issue to smartphone manufacturers as sales skyrocket. Major tech companies all want a piece of the same pie and Apple isn't alone in its interest of InterDigital's patents. Bloomberg says that Samsung has also been invited to bid on InterDigital's portfolio. Given that Samsung and Apple are locked up in patent lawsuits, it's possible that this could turn into a heated bidding war, possibly inflating the estimated $5 billion price.
