Counter-rumor pushes iPhone 5 to October

A dissenting claim early Monday argued that the iPhone 5 would ship in October. Despite AT&T blocking off part of September, the new Apple handset wouldn't arrive until towards the end of October, a month later. The AllThingsD insider wouldn't say why it had been moved so far into the year....

AT&T to throttle unlimited data plans from October 1

AT&T on Friday said that it would throttle the speed for those still using unlimited data. Starting October 1, the company will slow down the connections on those who are in the top five percent of heaviest use. Similar to T-Mobile USA, full speed won't come back until the next month....

10.7: FileMaker Pro Advanced 11 Date fields showing Asian Characters.

After upgrading to Lion, Many of my databases would no longer show dates that were in the default format. Instead they showed Asian characters for the year. This is despite an early post on Apple's compatibility site that FMP 11 did not have that problem. Only Pre 11. But it still does. The solution can be tedious for large FMP systems with lots of windows with many date fields but for now this is the only solution. A FileMaker update which corrects this is promised for August.

You must go to each date field, or select several at once, and change them to a CUSTOM date format. You can make the custom format the exact same as the default, and it will still correct the problem. If you select several date fields at once to change their format, make sure the only thing you change is the format. (A good hint in itself.)

[crarko adds: Yes, it's obscure, but there are a lot of FileMaker users out there. Let is know if this works.]

TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Cordy

Cordy is a fun little platformer that was originally released on Android, but has now come to iOS. The game's cute and relatively non-threatening -- you play as an adorable little robot, and instead of going up against bad guys, the main goal here is exploration. There are four levels to play through for free, and a full in-app purchase fills that out to 27. The action can get fast if you go for the timed challenges, but really, the game's all about just jumping around the levels, finding gears, and using the various mechanics to explore.

You can pick up the title to try it out for free on either iPad or iPhone. If you enjoy a solid platformer, give it a look for sure.

TUAW's Daily Mac App: Moonlight Mahjong

Moonlight Mahjong

There are few games quite as relaxing to play as Mahjong solitaire. Moonlight Mahjong is a great free solitaire game for the Mac, that's tuned for using a trackpad.

Not to be confused with classic game of mahjong, Mahjong solitaire is a tile matching game where you're presented with a pile of tiles taken from mahjong (hence the name), with the task of matching pairs to whittle down the pile. The tiles are stacked on top of each other, making only a limited number available for matching at any one time.

Moonlight Mahjong gives you the choice of four different playing modes: Scramble and Challenge modes, where you compete against the computer, aka "Tilebot" to clear the board; Puzzle, which is classic mahjong solitaire without Tilebot; and finally Relaxation, which is like Puzzle mode but there are no time limits and your tiles are automatically reshuffled.

The 3D tiles give you a bit of depth perception, while the pile is displayed atop one of its gorgeous backgrounds. You've got the choice of some beautiful Hubble images, paintings or photos, while the sound effects have a wind-chime style to them. Having come from iOS, the developers have given the game a touch-like feel by implementing decent multi-touch trackpad controls. You can select a tile by just lifting your finger off the trackpad, while you can move the pile about with standard gestures (pinch-to-zoom etc).

Moonlight Mahjong looks great, plays well and adds a little competitive element with the introduction of your Tilebot playing partner. If you're looking for a relaxing game for your Mac and like matching tiles, the free Moonlight Mahjong is definitely worth a look.
