10.7: Keyboard shortcut to Documents folder in Open/Save dialogs

Mac OS X has long had the Go menu in the Finder. Within it there has long been quick Finder access to folders. The shortcuts listed there have also been usable in Open/Save dialogs (with the exception that going to the Desktop in an Open/Save dialog is done with Command+D, not Command+Shift+D like is used in the Finder).

10.6 added the Documents folder to the Go menu. Oddly, though, its Command+Shift+O shortcut that could used in the Finder was not available in Open/Save dialogs. 10.7, though, corrects this and users can now use it to get to their Documents folder in any Open/Save dialog.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described.]

Apple TV Seeing Moderate Success, But No Hardware Update Imminent?

Yesterday, we noted that Logitech had slashed the price of its Google TV-powered Revue set-top box to below cost following a quarter in which customer returns actually exceeded new sales. We reported that development within the context of Apple's measured steps into the television market that have seen the Apple TV primarily function as a media hub for iTunes Store content and a handful of streaming services.

Apple does indeed appear to be having some moderate success with the Apple TV, as industry checks by Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reveal that Apple shipped approximately 480,000 Apple TV units during the second quarter, as reported to AppleInsider. The performance represents more than 70% year-over-year growth as Apple transitioned from the larger hard-drive based first-generation Apple TV to the iOS-powered second-generation streaming device.

Kuo's industry sources claim, however, that Apple is not planning a hardware update for the Apple TV during the current quarter, putting a damper on the excitement of those hoping that changes in iOS 5 would open the door to a true 1080p Apple TV. Instead, Apple is said to be relying on iOS enhancements to boost the AirPlay capabilities of the Apple TV to better support Apple's latest iOS devices.

Should Apple win current legal battles, payoff would be huge

Bernstein's Toni Sacconaghi believes that Apple is confident it will win current legal battles with HTC and Samsung, and is therefore in for the long haul. Apple has "more to lose" than its rivals, Sacconaghi notes, and a whole lot to win.

Philip Elmer-Dewitt has highlighted the most interesting notes from Sacconaghi's statement, including:

  • We anticipate that Apple will push its legal claims hard and unrelentingly and believe that the company's key goal is to upend Android's momentum by forcing a work around on key essential features which, if successful, could have huge, positive financial implications for Apple.
  • Should Apple prevail in forcing Android to rework some of its functionality, resulting in market share shifts, it could have huge, positive financial implications for Apple...a 10 percentage point shift in smartphone market share from Android to Apple...is worth an estimated $30B+ in annual revenue and $10+ in annual EPS to Apple.

That's a lot of dough. Steve Jobs has long said that Apple takes its patents seriously, which Tim Cook recently reiterated: "We have a very simple view: we love competition, but we want people to invent their own stuff. And we're going to make sure we defend our portfolio."
