Annotate information in Connect to Server dialog

In Finder, Command+K (Finder » Go » Connect to Server…) permits the storing of frequently used server addresses and protocols. However, when servers are indicated only by their IPv4 or IPv6 addresses, it is not easy to remember which address corresponds with which server. There appears to be no way to include text information associated with server addresses.

It is possible to include the # anchor at the end of the address and to indicate some information after this #. No spaces are allowed after the #.

Examples:

vnc://fkm@[2b01:0670:3201:1137:0211:24ff:ffe0:4bc6]#eMac_Conservation
afp://mgi@[2a01:0e35:2d49:0580:9227:e2ff:fef2:29ff]#Macbook_d_Emelyne
smb://129.172.107.192#DataXlab

Note that the true addresses have been changed of course in the examples.

Comcast Working on iPad TV Streaming Service Called AnyPlay

Comcast, the United States' largest cable and internet provider, is working on a television streaming solution for iPads, to compete with Cablevision and Time Warner. The streaming product was announced earlier this year, but details haven't been released until now.

The product, called AnyPlay, allows Comcast subscribers to view live television on their iPad as long as it's connected to their home network; users must have a special Motorola box which, apparently, takes the live cable stream and sends it directly to the Xfinity TV iPad app over a local wireless network. The service won't work over Wi-Fi from other locations, or via 3G.

Update: Engadget believes the Motorola Televation cable TV-to-IPTV box is what Comcast will be using for AnyPlay.

Other solutions, like Time Warner's, stream live video over an internet connection. Comcast's AnyPlay appears to be a cable box that sends video to the iPad rather than to a television. Users can watch "most" channels included with their Xfinity TV service. Users can register up to 10 tablets, but only watch live TV on one tablet at a time.

Currently, Xfinity customers can use the Xfinity TV app to watch On Demand programming, search TV listings, and schedule DVR recordings.

There is no indication of release dates or availability, but AnyPlay will be available in limited markets at first, and spreading to all Comcast customers eventually.

Comcast previously used the "AnyPlay" name on an announced but never released product with Panasonic in 2008.

Apple updates malware definitions to address PDF trojan

According to MacRumors, Apple has updated its malware definitions to address a PDF trojan that gained widespread attention last week. While reports indicated that the trojan's damage was limited to installing a backdoor in users' systems, Apple has moved relatively quickly to address the threat anyway.

CNET reports that yet another OS X trojan is making the rounds, however, this time posing as an Adobe Flash installer. Avoiding this bit of malware is simple: if you must install Flash on your system, only download it from a trusted source like Adobe's own site or MacUpdate. A similar bit of malware made the rounds in August, but Apple updated malware definitions to address the threat; it's likely the company will do the same to squash this newest trojan.

Your Mac's malware definitions are supposed to auto-update, but if you're not afraid of diving into the command line you can force your Mac to update manually.

iTunes Match beta data to reset on Monday

Late last night, Apple registered developers who are participating in the iTunes Match beta were notified that their test data will be zapped from orbit. Apple's email to devs was brief and to the point:

To continue to improve the overall quality and reliability of iTunes Match, it has become necessary to delete all current iCloud libraries.

All iCloud libraries will be deleted on Monday, September 26th at 9AM PDT. To prepare, please turn off iTunes Match on all of your computers and iOS devices. On your computer, choose Store > Turn off iTunes Match. On your iOS device, tap Settings > Music, then turn off iTunes Match.

Of course, beta is beta, and unless those participating in the test have actually deleted their music files from their computers in favor of cloud storage only, they won't lose anything but sync time. This sort of mass reset may foreshadow the wider introduction of the Match service.

Hat tip to Aaron, Brian and everyone who sent this in.
