North Carolina town goes paperless, embraces iPads

The town of Cornelius, NC has launched a new program designed to cut down on paper use in the town's government facilities, and the linchpin of this program is none other than Apple's tablet, the iPad. According to the local Herald Weekly paper, the town passed out iPad 2s to commissioners at a recent board meeting, and plans to use the devices for sharing agenda packets, budget information, and everything else you need to run a small town, without printing any of it out.

The whole plan seems surprisingly well thought out -- the town actually ran a trial of the program with just three iPads, and the paperless agenda plan has been set up for quite a while now. It was relatively cheap, too -- the town has only spent $5200 on the iPads (not counting some document sharing software previously purchased), and fully expects to make that money right back up in saved time and paper costs.

Pretty impressive move, and of course this means the town commissioners also get to use Apple's magical and revolutionary device during meetings (though they should probably keep the Angry Birds off of government property, just in case). We've seen iPads used in a professional setting before to great effect, and here's another situation where Apple's product is not only better for a few reasons, but actually cheaper as well.

[via Gigaom -- but the town is not in Colorado, it's in North Carolina]

View PDFs in Firefox 5

To date, people who wanted to view downloaded PDFs on a Mac have had three options:
  • Use Safari's in-line PDF viewer plug-in to view PDFs in Safari.
  • Use Firefox v3 and the Firefox PDF plug-in for Mac to view PDFs in Firefox.
  • Use a current version of Firefox, download the PDFs, and view them in a PDF reader app.
That's right -- there was no way to view PDFs in Firefox 4 or 5 as one could do in Safari, because the Firefox PDF plug-in didn't work above Firefox 3.6.

That is, it didn't officially work. But it turns out that with some simple modifications, you can get this plug-in to work just fine in Firefox 5 and probably future versions of Firefox, thus allowing you to view PDFs in the browser once again.

  • With the Applications folder open in Finder, do a Get Info on Firefox.
  • Check the box for 'Open in 32-bit mode.'
  • If Firefox is currently open, quit and relaunch it.
  • Do ...

Always keep an application open

If you have some app that you always want to keep open -- in my case it's Stickies and DragThing, which I use frequently -- it's easy to set up the computer to do that for you.

For example, to keep Stickies permanently open, remove Stickies from the login items for your account (if you've placed it there), quit Stickies, and then create the following plist file in the LaunchAgents folder of your home Library (~/Library/LaunchAgents) with the name user.launchkeep.stickies.plist:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict>   <key>Label</key>   <string>user.launchkeep.stickies</string>   <key>KeepAlive& ...
