10.7: Editing Mail.app flags

Apple's Mail flags descriptive text can be edited.

If Red, Orange or Yellow do not reflect your flags usage you can change it. Once a message has been flagged, say, in yellow, you can click on the word 'Yellow' after opening the 'Flagged' folder in the Mailboxes list on the left. You can now edit the text.

[crarko adds: It looks like the Flagged folders are basically Smart Folders, and you can rename them however you like.]

AT&T and Sprint Trade Barbs Over T-Mobile Merger

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has been a constant critic of the proposed AT&T/T-Mobile merger, hammering the deal as bad for competition and bad for consumers. However, Hesse said yesterday that he isn't an opponent of all telecom mergers, but believes that the Department of Justice would view an alternate merger pair -- such as T-Mobile and Sprint, perhaps -- very differently.
However, if such a hypothetical deal were reached, ?You could make a very, very strong argument? that the antitrust regulators would approve it, Hesse said. He said the hypothetical combination of of two value players could allow a strong competitor to Verizon Wireless and AT&T.
AT&T's head lobbyist, Jim Cicconi, AT&T Senior Executive Vice President, External and Legislative Affairs had harsh words for Hesse in response:
Yesterday, the CEO of Sprint said the Department of Justice should block AT&T from merging with T-Mobile, but would have good reasons to instead allow Sprint to purchase them. For months Sprint has spoken disingenuously about their motives for opposing AT&T's merger with T-Mobile. Now, Mr. Hesse's public musings have made their motives much more clear. That they would act in their own economic interest is not surprising. That they would expect the United States Government to be a willing partner certainly is.
A federal judge set a mid-February 2012 trial date to hear the Department of Justice's arguments for blocking the merger, but denied Sprint's request to join the DoJ's suit.

Dan Hesse and Sprint have a poor track record regarding large mergers. When Sprint and Nextel merged in 2005, the companies said the value of the merged company would be $70 billion. Today, Sprint's market cap is just over $9 billion.

Sprint's stock price is down more than 80% since Dan Hesse took over as CEO in December 2007.

Many U.S. Schools Adding iPad, Trimming Textbooks

Stephanie Reitz of Associated Press reports on the growing use of iPad in public secondary school classrooms this fall, noting a ?move away from textbooks in favor of the lightweight tablet computers.? Educator benefits range from using iPad for interactive demonstrations of math solutions to teaching children with autism spectrum disorders and learning disabilities. Principal Patrick Larkin of Boston?s Burlington High School calls iPad a better long-term investment than textbooks, saying, ?The bottom line is that the iPads will give our kids a chance to use much more relevant materials.?

Another use for the Safari Reading List

When Apple added the Reading List feature to Safari I wasn't too impressed as I didn't use any of the applications such as Instapaper before and I still don't. Then I realized their was another use for Reading Lists.

Instead of just using Reading Lists to save, lets say a news article you were reading and couldn't finish, you can use Reading Lists as a way to temporarily bookmark a page without making a true bookmark. Since the Reading List feature just saves the link to the page it can be very useful.

An example is doing research and instead of making bookmarks and folders and what not holding the links to the research and then later having to delete it from your bookmarks just add the links to the Reading List. Since the links will remain in the reading list until you clear it out they won't be added to your bookmarks and when you're finish using them just clicking the 'x' on each one or clicking clear all will remove them, make it easier to manage links to page ...

Toddy Smart Cloth: A stylish way to keep a smudge-free life

In the day to day usage of your iPad, iPhone, or Mac, the screen and case tend to pick up a lot of crud. Whether it's streaks on the screen from food-covered fingers or spray marks from that unexpected sneeze, you need something good to clean your Apple devices from everyday grime. For me, the solution has been a Toddy Smart Cloth (US$9.99 to $14.99).

Yeah, I know I'm not much of a fashionista, but sometimes it's just nice to have something that is functional and looks good -- that's why I love Apple products. Designer Todd Gabel felt the same way and apparently has the same aversion to screen smudges that I do. The result was the Toddy Smart Cloth, which comes in a variety of smart-looking styles.

Unlike many cleaning cloths that come in sizes that are almost impossible to fold into a reasonable size for carrying, my Toddy Smart Cloth is small. Measuring 5" x 7" (others are 9" x 9"), the cloth consists of a soft, silk microfiber on one side and the standard microfiber cloth on the other. I've found the smooth side to be perfect for lightly removing specks of dirt from the lens of my camera. Getting the schmutz off of my iPad screen, however, is a job for the microfiber material. Surprisingly enough, it doesn't seem to require any moisture or spray to do most of the cleaning, although I occasionally spritz on a little iClean for tough cleaning jobs.

Rather than the typical drab blue or gray cleaning cloths, Toddy Smart Cloth has chosen to add a little style. Mine is orange on the microfiber side, and has a pattern on the other side that would not be out of place on a high-end men's tie. The style is called "The Duke," and has been a companion to my iOS devices for about six months now. When I've dirtied it up quite a bit, I just drop it in a load of wash on the cold cycle to get it spotless again.

One other cool thing about the Toddy Smart Cloth: it is treated with an anti-microbial coating, so if you're in the habit of letting others fondle your devices, at least you can keep their germs at bay. By the way, if you buy two of these cloths, the third is free -- a great way to mix styles to match your mood. It's also a great gift idea, and it's not too early to start thinking about the upcoming holidays.
