Improve performance of Home Sharing in iTunes

You can make iTunes Home Sharing work better by switching off the old unused method of sharing.

I'd been having lots of problems with connecting from my Apple TV and iPad/iPods to my iTunes library using Home Sharing. It turns out that Home Sharing is completely separate to the old sharing system in iTunes and the old version can be switched off. This has improved the performance a lot for me.

[crarko adds: I'm trying this, but it's too early for me to tell if there is any improvement or not. It certainly seems worth trying if you don't need the old style of sharing.]

Mac OS X Lion clean install may need Snow Leopard disc

Apple chief Steve Jobs in a reported message to a Mac user claimed that Mac OS X Lion might need a Snow Leopard disc for a clean install. On those systems that don't ship with Lion media, he said a user can "can clean install Snow Leopaard [sic] first." He didn't explicitly rule out the option of starting from scratch with Lion for the MacRumors reader but implied it might not always be supported....

Hawaii, Miami Apple Stores to be remodeled

Apple's retail improvement and expansion continues in both Hawaii and Florida. The Ala Moana store in Hawaii is slated for a complete overhaul starting soon. The retail outlet will be moving several doors down to a temporary location that will house the Apple Store until construction on its permanent home is completed. The project will cost US$250,000 but it's money well spent as the Ala Moana store is located in one of the top U.S. malls for foot traffic and per-purchase totals.

Upgrading an Apple Store is not always smooth sailing, though. Apple recently pulled a proposal to demolish and move to a new building near its current Miami Beach, Florida location. According to the proposal, Apple would move from its current store on 738 Lincoln Road to a new store at 1001. The move was derailed by the city's Historic Preservation Board which rejected the plans because they wanted the new building to be smaller and match the historic architecture of this district in the Florida city.

The New MacBook Pro: The Last Notebook You?ll Ever Need

Noting that the new 15- and 17-inch quad-core MacBook Pro models deliver ?twice the CPU performance of Core 2 Duo, three times the graphics performance of the previous generation?s Nvidia GeForce GT 330M, and more than ten times the external I/O bandwidth of 800MHz FireWire,? InfoWorld reviewer Tom Yager writes, ?This brand of magic can?t be conjured by Apple?s competitors.? He adds: ?If, in all of this, you can?t see a reason to upgrade your notebook, maybe I can bring the point home: This might be the last notebook computer you?ll ever need or want.?

Sprint claims AT&T could boost capacity 6X without T-Mobile

Sprint chose an unusual strategy in its opposition to AT&T's proposed buyout of T-Mobile by offering a solution to AT&T's claimed spectrum crisis. An FCC filing (below) claimed AT&T could increase its network capacity 600 percent by 2015 simply by making better use of the network resources it has. Using its large resource of unused spectrum for 4G could improve capacity by 250 percent alone; introducing a mixed-size network with both large and small cells could boost it by 300 percent, Sprint argued....

GarageBand for iPad: Music Talent Not Required

Houston Chronicle technology columnist Dwight Silverman, a non-musician who ?can only intermittently carry a tune,? describes how he was able to release his inner Clapton using the Smart Guitars and stomp box effects included in GarageBand for iPad. He writes, ?Even if you can?t play a note, GarageBand for iPad will have you playing and even composing music soon after you first fire it up. It?s an astonishing piece of software, easily the best application I?ve seen so far this year.?
