Daily Mac App: Pandoras Box

I enjoy integrating Pandora into my music rotation along with my iTunes library and Spotify, but doing so on the desktop either means keeping another web browser window up or downloading Pandora's desktop client for OS X. Pandoras Box does a good job in condensing the service down to a menu bar app, but there are a few caveats.

Pandoras Box is a recent arrival to the Mac App Store, but the first version turned away many potential users by requiring both a paid account for Pandora and downloading the desktop client. However, a recent update eliminates both those requirements, turning it into a more useful utility for casual and power Pandora users.

It's easy to give a thumbs up/thumbs down rating from the app, or undo it, and toggle among your pre-established stations. However, creating a new station involves using an existing official Pandora client or the website. You can tweet what you're listening to in Twitter and links are provided to iTunes and Amazon for purchases.

There is the option to match songs with those in iTunes to increase play count there. Other options include integration with Last.fm, using keyboard media keys, enabling Growl notifications and launching at login.

US$4.99 might be a little high for Pandoras Box. Similar apps run around $2.99, and I think that's a fair amount to charge for features that it has.

Sprint's CEO says he doesn't want to talk about whether the carrier is getting the iPhone. But he's not exactly going out of his way to deny it, despite several reports that indicate Sprint will be U.S. customers' third carrier option to buy Apple's upcoming smartphone.

Apple is worth more than all of these things

With Apple (AAPL) having a market cap of roughly US$387 billion, it becomes the most valuable company in the US. Matter of fact, it currently has a $30 billion lead over the next most valuable company, Exxon Mobil (XOM). However, market caps are boring. What's fun is to look at how much Apple is worth compared to other things. Like drugs, the Star Wars franchise and Denmark.

That's exactly what the Things Apple is Worth More Than tumblr does. It turns out that at a market cap of $380 billion+, Apple is worth more than:

  • All the illegal drugs in the world ($321 billion)
  • The Star Wars, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Steven King, and Twilight franchises combined ($49 billion)
  • The GDP of Denmark ($337 billion)
  • and my personal favorite, the American obesity epidemic ($300 billion)

The tumblr blog has more gems Apple is worth so be sure to check it out. It's an interesting list that really puts it in perspective just how much the Mac, iPhone and iPad maker is worth.

Teach for America and Apple distributing 9,000 iPads

When Apple introduced the iPad 2, it also introduced a program for people who planned to upgrade to donate their original iPad to an organization called Teach For America, which would in turn give the iPads to some of the U.S.'s most impoverished schools. This month, the first fruits of the program were realized as Apple began delivering iPads to every Teach For America corps member -- more than 9,000 in 38 states....

Apple's Stock Price Tops $410 to Reach All-Time High

Even as the broader markets are down so far today, Apple's stock price is up a healthy 2.4% over Friday's close, pushing the stock price to an all-time high of over $410 per share. The jump has pushed Apple's market capitalization to $380 billion, giving the company an approximately $25 billion cushion over second-place Exxon Mobil in the rankings of most valuable companies.

Apple's recent stock performance is evidence of the faith the markets have in Apple even as Tim Cook has officially replaced Steve Jobs as CEO. Apple's stock price initially dropped 5% in after-hours trading following Jobs' resignation but rebounded during regular trading the next day to close down only a fraction of a percentage point. Since that time nearly four weeks ago, Apple's stock is up 15% and is now higher than it had ever been under Jobs.

Update: After touching $413.23 late in the trading day, Apple's stock closed at $411.63 per share today.
